Easter Report Cumann na Saoırse Náısıúnta 24/04/2022

Glorious sun shone down on the large crowd gathered to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising at the grave of modern Fenian and Cumann na Saoırse Náısıúnta co-founder Joe Stynes. Master of ceremonies Jane Enright opened up the program by inviting Maıréad Ní Dhubhda and Mıcheál Ó Coısdealbha to read Forógra na Poblachta, which was appropriately followed by a commanding reading of the Easter Statement from the Republican Movement in Ireland by Cumann na Saoırse Náısıúnta Chairwoman Maggie Trainor. Seosamh Ó Flatharta gave a stirring rendition of Padraig Pearse’s 1915 Oration at the grave of Ó Donavon Rossa followed by Byron Heller who gave a dynamic recitation of Forógra na Cásca ı mBéarla. Susanne Heller gave a marvelous delivery of the Easter Statement from the Irish Republican Movement in America, followed by Vic Sackett who closed out the graveside portion of the program by reading the late Brıan Mor’s The Fenian Faith; a reading that was particularly emotional for many as 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of Brıans passing. Gone but never forgotten. Friends and supporters of the Republican Movement reconvened a short distance from the cemetery at Keane’s restaurant for refreshment and to continue the duty of the day. Underway at the restaurant, members of Cumann na Saoırse Náısıúnta invited Rosaleen “Lynn” Stynes up to accept the 2022 Michael and Pearl Flannery Spirit of Freedom Award. Following a short but commanding speech by Lynn, breakfast was served, and attendees spent time in fellowship and camaraderie.

(More information to follow later this month)

On the 106th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, CnSN/NIFC will hold its 2022 Easter Commemoration at the grave of CnSN/NIFC co-founder and unrepentant Fenian, Joe Stynes, in Woodlawn Cemetery, Webster Ave. and 233rd St., Bronx, NY 10470, at 10:00am. Grave location: Rose Hill Plot, North Border Rd., corner of Elder Ave. Directions to and within the cemetery are printed on a separate attachment. Please feel free to bring your family and friends.

This year’s theme is the 100th anniversary of the Irish Civil War, which began in 1922 and lasted through 1924.   Every year at Easter, Irish Republicans around the world read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic at a ceremony commemorating those who have died for the Irish Republic.

An Irish brunch buffet (with Mimosas and Bloody Marys) will follow at 11:00 at Keane’s Bar and Restaurant, 4340 Katonah Avenue, Bronx, NY 10470. Keane’s is less than ½ mile from the cemetery. Tickets are $30 and are available at the door. Children under 14 are free.

At Keane’s we will present the Michael and Pearl Flannery Spirit of Freedom Award to Lynne Stynes for carrying on the ideals of her father, NIFC co-founder and Co. Kildare native, Joe Stynes. Lynne was nominated for this award in 2020 but Covid-19 precautions prevented us from honoring her that year.

We encourage you to consider placing an ad in our Easter journal to honor your loved ones and friends. We need journal ads as soon as possible. You can mail a check later. Please see attached journal ad form. Email ads to irelandfirst04@gmail.com.

We hope you will join us at the commemoration and the restaurant for good food and fellowship.
